As it happened: Punjab Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2022, Wankhede Stadium

By Hemant Brar

Livingstone takes 23 off Shepherd, Kings win by five wickets

Livingstone is in a hurry. He hits Shepherd for two fours and two sixes in a 23-run 15th over. That puts Kings only two short of the target.
Facing his first ball of the season, Prerak Mankad hits Malik over covers for four to seal the game with 29 balls to spare.
Here's a teaser from our report:
Punjab Kings ended their season on a high note, registering a thumping five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an otherwise dead rubber at the Wankhede Stadium.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, captaining Sunrisers in the absence of Kane Williamson, decided to bat first after winning the toss but at 99 for 6 after 16 overs, it looked like Sunrisers might even struggle to reach 150. Romario Shepherd and Washington Sundar, though, ransacked 58 off the last four overs to lift them to a respectable total.

Kings batted in the fifth gear throughout their innings. A flying start from Jonny Bairstow meant they raced away to 62 for 1 by the end of the powerplay. In the last ten overs, they needed only 61. Liam Livingstone’s unbeaten 49 off 22 balls, studded with two fours and five sixes, ensured they needed no more than 31 balls to knock off those runs.

Kings lose two quick wickets

Farooqi cleans up Dhawan but there's no respite for Sunrisers tonight. Jitesh Sharma has been one of the fastest starters this IPL and it's no different tonight. He hits three fours and a six in his first five balls but he holes out to long-on off Suchith while attempting another six.
In between those two dismissals, Washington reprieved Livingstone by putting down a sitter, also off Suchith.

No stopping Livingstone

After despatching Washington over deep midwicket, he takes on Umran Malik. First, he smashes him over covers for a flat six. On the next ball, he slogs him over deep midwicket for another maximum.
By the end of the tenth over, Kings need 61 off 60.

Washington ends Agarwal's painful stay

Agarwal was still in pain after getting hit in the ribs. He pulled Washington for a single but as soon as he hit the shot, his hand went to his rib cage. Two balls later, he pulled one straight to deep midwicket.
Livingstone came in and showed how it's done by sending it deep into the stands.

Umran gets rid of Shahrukh

Shahrukh welcomed Malik into the attack by drilling him down the ground for four but the bowler had his revenge two balls later. Shahrukh went for another big hit but ended up miscuing it and Washington back-pedalled from mid-on to pouch it.
Agarwal came in at No. 4. On the very first ball, Malik hit him in the rib cage with a lifter. The batters ran a leg-bye but Agarwal is in some pain. In fact, he is now lying on the ground as the physio comes in.
When Malik had come out to bat, Agarwal had a few words to say to him. Perhaps the learning is to not mess up with someone who can bowl over 150kph.

Dhawan, Shahrukh keep motoring on

On the second ball he faced, Shahrukh dismissed Bhuvneshwar Kumar over deep midwicket. In the next over, he clipped Farooqi for four. Dhawan too got into the act, jumping out of his crease against Suchith and hitting him over deep midwicket for back-to-back sixes.
Kings end the powerplay with 62 for 1. As per our Forecaster, they have an 87.57% chance of winning.

Bairstow's cameo comes to an end

It looked like Bairstow was trying to hit every ball to the boundary but he runs out of luck. He swings across to a length ball from Fazalhaq Farooqi but misses and the stumps are in disarray.
Farooqi leaps in joy, and looks like as Bairstow was walking back, someone said something to him, which he didn't like and replied back.
Shahrukh Khan has been promoted to No. 3.

A couple of streaky fours. A couple bludgeoned right from the middle of the bat. A dropped catch, by Malik off Washington. And Bairstow has moved to 21 off just 11.

An eventful final over from Ellis. Shepherd starts by hitting the first ball over long-on but Ellis gets Washington and Suchith off back-to-back deliveries. On the last ball, Bhuvneshwar is run out at the keeper's end while trying to sneak in a bye but it turns out to be a no-ball. Ellis uproots Umran Malik's off stump with the free hit but they run a bye off it, Malik just making his ground at the bowler's end.
The last four overs produced 58 runs.
Yesterday, Rohit had said this wasn't a 160-run pitch. Will 157 prove to be enough for SRH?

At 99 for 5 after 16 overs, it looked like Kings could restrict Sunrisers well under 150 but Romario Shepherd and Washington Sundar ransacked 36 from overs 17 and 18. First, Ellis was in the firing line before Washington got innovative against Rabada.
Arshdeep too went for 12 in the 19th over.
SRH 147/5 with one over to go.

Brar picks up his third

And it's a big one - Aiden Markram. Turn and bounce for the left-arm spinner to beat the outside edge and leave Markram off-balance. Jitesh Sharma whips off the bail with Markram's back foot just out of the crease.
Brar ends up with 4-0-26-3.

Ellis dents SRH further

A fuller delivery from Nathan Ellis, going across left-hand batter Nicholas Pooran. He goes for the drive only to nick it behind. A regulation catch for Jitesh Sharma.
SRH 87/4 after 13 overs. Our Forecaster is predicting 150 for them.

Abhishek vs spin

159 Abhishek Sharma's strike rate against spin in IPL 2022. Off 105 balls of spin, he has scored 167 runs.
But as I was typing this, Brar snares him. He tries to take on long-on and almost succeeds too. But Livingstone leaps in the air and plucks it with both hands while maintaining the balance to land inside. Abhishek walks back for 43 off 32 balls.

Tripathi picks out short fine leg

It wasn't a wicket-taking delivery from Brar. It was a length ball down the leg side. Tripathi went down on one knee and tried to sweep it uppishly, aiming to go over short fine leg. Instead, he ended up hitting it straight to the fielder, Shikhar Dhawan.

Tripathi gets a reprieve

With just 32 runs coming from the first five overs, Tripathi tries to go hard in the final over of the powerplay. The first ball of the over, from Nathan Ellis, is fuller around off. Tripathi hits it right back towards the bowler, just above the head height. Ellis gets his right hand to it in his followthrough but it doesn't stick. Three balls later, Tripathi flicks him over deep-backward square leg for a six before Abhishek despatches him for four.
Sunrisers end the powerplay at 43 for 1. In the next over, Abhishek pulls Brar over deep midwicket for his first six.

Rabada sends back Garg

A cross-seam delivery on the stumps. Garg looks to flick it on the leg side but ends up closing the face of the bat early. The leading edge lobs up on the off side. Mayank Agarwal moves to his left from mid-off and pouches it. Tripathi is the new batter, and he gets off the mark with a flicked four through midwicket off his second ball.

A sedate start for SRH

Opening the bowling, Liam Livingstone tossed one up to Priyam Garg before darting the next five to Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek hit one of those for four but the rest were dots. From the other end, Arshdeep Singh too bowled a tight over, conceding only four.

Sunrisers opt to bat, Prerak Mankad debuts for Kings

Bhuvneshwar Kumar wins the toss and opts to bat first. He expects the pitch to slow down in the second half - the last night's game was played on this very pitch. Sunrisers have made two changes: Romario Shepherd comes in for Williamson, and Suchith for Natarajan. Kings have made three changes. Nathan Ellis, Shahrukh Khan and Prerak Mankad replace Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Rahul Chahar and Rishi Dhawan.
Here are the XIs:
Punjab Kings: 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Prerak Mankad, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Shahrukh Khan, 8 Harpreet Brar, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Arshdeep Singh

Sunrisers, Kings look to sign off on a high

It's not often in the IPL that all four playoffs spots are sealed before the final league game. But that has been the case this time, which renders tonight's game a dead rubber. But both Punjab Kings and Sunriser Hyderabad would like to finish on a high note.
Sunrisers, meanwhile, are without their regular captain Kane Williamson, who flew back to New Zealand for the birth of his child. In his absence, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the side.
