As it happened - Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings

By Deivarayan Muthu

Dhoni turns the clock back

With 16 needed off the last four balls, Dhoni goes 6,4,2,4 to turn the clock back and win it for CSK. The great finisher still has it although Unadkat's lengths and options were questionable. The left-arm seamer pitched one right in Dhoni's swinging arc and then missed his yorkers under pressure. Heartbreak for MI. They slide to their seventh defeat in as many games

CSK take 11 off the next over, bowled by Bumrah. They now need 17 off the last over, which will be bowled by Unadkat, with Dhoni off strike.

Jadeja finds long-off

Rohit pushes mid-off back to long-off. Meredith goes fuller, but this is the offcutter, asking Jadeja to manufacture pace for himself. He picks out Varma at long-off for 3 off 8 balls. Pretorius joins Dhoni. CSK are 106 for 6 in the 16th over; their win probability is down to 24.47

Sams sparkles for Mumbai

After being carted for 1 for 50 in three overs in his last game against KKR, Sams marks his return with 4-0-30-4, including the wicket of Rayudu in his last over. He misses the yorker, but it's still a hard-to-hit full-toss. Just ask Rayudu. He splices it to Pollard running in from long-off. Dhoni joins Jadeja. CSK's win probability has dropped to 42.08%

Unadkat, Sams apply pressure on CSK

Unadkat has Uthappa holing out to deep square leg with an on-pace short ball. Four overs later, Sams finds the outside edge of Dube, which is snaffled by a diving Kishan, for his third wicket. CSK are 88 for 4 in the 13th over. Their win probability has dipped to 50.39%. Shokeen is still wicketless but has given up only 13 runs in his three overs.

Shokeen has to wait for his first T20 wicket

With two right-handers in the middle, Shokeen, the debutant offspinner, comes into the attack in the eighth over and creates a chance fourth ball. He has Uthappa chipping a weak drive back to him. Replays indicate the ball hitting his palm before it bobbles out and clangs off the ground. What happens to the next ball? Pumped over the sightscreen for six. CSK's win probability has jumped to 64.52%

Will that slip by Bravo cost Super Kings the match?

S Rajesh puts numbers to Bravo's drop: Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off 43 ensured that Mumbai Indians went past 150, but what would they have ended up with had Dwayne Bravo snaffled that chance at slip in the fifth over when Varma had made just 2? According to ESPNcricinfo’s Luck Index, MI would have finished on just 121, 34 runs fewer than they eventually got.
This calculation is based on a complex algorithm that assumes that Varma would have got out at that point, and the extra balls he played is then allocated to the batters who remained unbeaten in the innings (in this case Jayadev Unadkat) and the other who didn’t bat (Riley Meredith and Jasprit Bumrah).
Varma ended up scoring 49 from 40 balls after that chance (including the four he got off the ball he was dropped). The algorithm calculates that the other batters would have scored only 15. That is based on the assumption that they would have been bowled out in under 20 overs (given that only Meredith and Bumrah were left to bat).

Gaikwad bags a duck

After finding some form with 73 against Gujarat Titans, Gaikwad slaps a half-tracker from Sams straight into the lap of Varma at backward point for a duck. CSK look to shake things up by bumping up Santner to No.3

Varma, Unadkat drag MI past 150

Unadkat is dropped by Dube on 1. "According to ESPNcricinfo's records, this is the first time five batters have been given chances through dropped catches or missed stumpings in IPL; also equals the most reprieves in an IPL innings," says Shiva Jayaraman. He proceeds to add an unbroken 35-run stand for the eighth wicket with Varma, who finishes with 51* off 43 balls. Unadkat and Varma haul MI to 155, which is a defendable total, according to Varma.

History repeats itself at the DY Patil Stadium

In the 2010 IPL final, MS Dhoni had Matthew Hayden at an unorthodox straight mid-off position, in addition to having a more conventional long-off. Dhoni dared Pollard to go over the top and he ended up holing out to straight mid-off. Twelve years later, CSK have two men at long-on, including a very straight fielder. They ask Pollard to go over him, but he skews the lofted hit and picks out Dube there. Gone for 14 off nine balls. Theekshana has done his job, coming away with 4-0-35-1. Mumbai are 111 for 6 in the 17th over.

Jadeja drops another catch

After going 30 balls without a boundary, Mumbai break the shackles by finding three boundaries in six balls. Soon after being pulled for four, Santner shifts his length and draws a sliced hit from Shokeen, but Jadeja shells another catch, this time at extra-cover, to reprieve the debutant on 14

SKY holes out

Jadeja and Santner bowled constricting lines and lengths to deny Suryakumar the inside-out drive. T20 is all about denial, right? CSK pack the leg-side field and dare Suryakumar to sweep. He brings out the shot, but ends up splicing a top-edge to Choudhary at deep square leg for 32 off 21 balls. MI are 47 for 4 in the eighth over. Shokeen, the debutant, has been sent in at No.6 ahead of Pollard.

Spotlight on Choudhary

Choudhary was a mere net bowler for CSK last season, but he had shown - let's use the word - enough spark to convince the team management to bid for him at the IPL 2022 auction. He might not have got a game had Deepak Chahar been fit. It was Tushar Deshpande who made his CSK debut ahead of Choudhary, but the left-arm seamer has since moved up the pecking order.
L Balaji, the CSK bowling coach, rates Choudhary quite highly because he can swing the new ball. He is among Balaji's 'projects' along with Deshpande.
Brevis gives Choudhary the charge, but he gets an offcutter to kick up from the DY Patil track and has him nicking off to Dhoni for 4. Choudhary could've got his fourth wicket in the powerplay had DJ Bravo hung on to a fairly straightforward catch at slip; Tilak Varma was on 2 at that point.

Dhoni misses stumping, Jadeja drops catch

Mumbai could've been four down in the second over, but believe it or not, Dhoni has missed a stumping and Jadeja has dropped a catch to reprieve Suryakumar and Brevis respectively. It was Santner who created both those chances in another action-packed over

Choudhary takes out Rohit, Kishan

Mukesh Choudhary's first ball is a full inswinger, which Rohit jams out. The next ball is a length-ball inswinger, which stops on Rohit who can only chip it straight to mid-on. Dhoni seems to have enjoyed that strike. He whispers something into Choudhary's ear. Sampath Bandarupalli, our stats whiz, tells this is Rohit's 14th duck in the IPL. Nobody has bagged more ducks in the league.
Choudhary isn't done yet in the opening over. He now gets the ball to swing away against Kishan and castles him with a near yorker. Both Rohit and Kishan gone for ducks.

CSK opt to bowl; Moeen, Jordan left out

"Wicket looks on the damp side and we want to take advantage of that," Jadeja says with a big smile on his face. "It might spin initially. Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan drop out for Mitch Santner and Dwaine Pretorius.
Australia quick Riley Meredith and Delhi offspin-bowling allrounder Hrithik Shokeen make their debuts for Mumbai. This, by the way, is Shokeen's first formal T20 game. Daniel Sams slots back into the XI. Fabian Allen, Tymal Mills, and M Ashwin have all been left out.

Bottom-of-the-table clash

Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians. The winningest teams in the IPL are tussling to avoid the wooden spoon this season. While CSK have a solitary victory to show for six attempts, Mumbai have lost all their six matches so far and are rooted to the bottom of the table. Can they break their duck today? Will Pollard, who announced his international retirement on Wednesday, finally hit form, against his favourite opposition? Will Pretorius replace Jordan for CSK? Plenty more to ponder for these two teams. Toss pretty soon
