Tripathi seals it for SRH

Needing 30 from 24 balls wasn't a big ask but Tripathi has reduced it to formality. He smashed two fours and a six in the 17th over, bowled by Jordan. The over went for 19, leaving SRH requiring 11 from 18. Abhishek holed out to Bravo in the next over, trying to launch a slower ball over long-off only to be taken well inside the boundary. He finished with 75 off 50 balls.
Pooran got an edged-four on the first ball he faced. With four required off 15 balls, Bravo went around the wicket to Tripathi but ended up straying down the leg side. Tripathi tickled it fine to seal the game. He ended with an unbeaten 39 off 15.
SRH have the first points on the board; CSK have now lost four in four.

A flurry of boundaries from Abhishek and Triptahi. Bravo was taken for 11, Choudhary for 13 and the equation is down to 34 needed from five overs.

A maiden half-century for Abhishek

Before this game, there were talks about if Abhishek Sharma should continue opening the innings for Sunrisers. They have someone like Rahul Tripathi, who has more of a proven performer at the top of the order. But Tom Moody defended the team's decision to open with Abhishek by saying it has been only two games so far and in one of them, the pitch really played some tricks. He also said that Abhishek hasn't had a long run at the top of the order, a position he bats at in domestic cricket.
Abhishek finally repays the faith shown by the franchise. On a sluggish surface, he took the attack to the opposition and took the pressure off Williamson. On 48, he steered Jordan towards point and sprinted back for the second but the third umpire found out that Abhishek was guilty of a short run. But on the very next ball, he opened the face of the bat for a single to third man, finally bringing up his maiden IPL fifty in his 25th match. Two balls later he smashed Jordan over long-on for a six.
Williamson fell in the next over, hitting a fuller delivery from Choudhary straight into the hands of Moeen Ali at extra cover. He made 32 off 40. Tripathi then eased off some pressure by pulling Choudhary over fine leg for six.
SRH need 58 off 42 balls. Nine wickets in hand.

A one-handed six by Williamson

When the chase had started, the required rate was 7.75 and even though SRH didn't lose a wicket, the asking rate had climbed to 8.69. Williamson is understandably playing the anchor's role but 13 off 25 is slow even for an anchor. He eases that pressure off by going down the wicket to Moeen Ali and launching him for a one-handed six into the sightscreen.
Abhishek finds a boundary on the final ball of the next over to take SRH to 62/0 after nine overs, ensuring the required rate doesn't go out of hand.
The left-right combination also means it's not easy for spinners to settle down, given one side is significantly shorter than the other.
SRH 69/0 after ten overs. They need 86 from the last ten.

SRH going at six an over

Chris Jordan bowled a tight one-run fifth over, hitting almost exclusively the hard length. At 24/0 after five overs, it looked like SRH were really struggling to keep the scorecard moving. But Abhishek changed that in the last over of the fielding restrictions. He lofted Theekshana over extra cover on the second ball of the over and then slog-swept him over deep midwicket for a six. That took them to 37 for no loss after the powerplay.
Jadeja then conceded only five from the seventh.

Abhishek takes his chances

He has to, because Williamson is the anchor. After mistiming two pulls off Choudhary, Abhishek finally nails one and picks up a boundary over midwicket. In the next over, he tries to take on Theekshana and even though he miscues the attempted loft, the thick outside edge goes past the short third man for four. He moves to 16 off 10.
SRH 23 for no loss after four

SRH watchful at the start

After a single on the first ball of the chase by Abhishek Sharma, Kane Williamson plays out five successive dots from Mukesh Choudhary. Maheesh Theekshana keeps it largely stump-to-stump from the other end but the only time he erred, bowling short and wide, Williamson crashed it to the cover boundary.

155 is SRH's target

T Natarajan misses his yorkers in the 19th over, and Ravindra Jadeja cashes in. Bhuvneshwar Kumar ends up bowling wides in the 20th when trying to keep the ball out of the batters' reach. The last two overs yield 29 runs, taking CSK to 154, which should be a challenging total on this pitch, especially against SRH who are not quite known for their chasing prowess.

Dhoni becomes Jansen's first wicket for SRH

Two dots from Bhuvneshwar in the 17th over, under pressure to hit out, MS Dhoni looks to pull the first ball he faces from Marco Jansen, and it is a slower short ball, and the top edge settles with fine leg. Gone for 3 off 6. Now they need Dwayne Bravo to help out Ravindra Jadeja. CSK 122 for 6 in 17.3 overs. Projected score 149.

Dhoni has Bhuvi's number

194 MS Dhoni's strike rate against Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the death. He has never got out to Bhuvneshwar in that phase. Among those who have faced at least 20 balls from Bhuvneshwar at the death in the IPL, only Sanju Samson and Kieron Pollard have scored quicker

It's Dhoni time

Shivam Dube looks to ramp a short ball from T Natarajan but can't clear short third man. It seems like a slower short ball. It's down to MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja now. They are 110 for 5 in 15.3 overs. Projected score 156.

Sneak in an offie

Two-paced pitch, two left-hand batters at the wicket, and Umran Malik having gone for 29 in three overs, Kane Williamson sees this as an opportunity to sneak in an over of part-time offspin from Aiden Markram, the 15th. It makes sense especially when one of the two batters is new to the wicket.
Markram makes a good start, conceding just two off the first three balls, but Moeen gets stuck into the fourth, just a touch short, and lofts him over wide long-on. However, Markram has his own back when he bowls slightly fuller, and Moeen still goes for that pull down the ground. Caught at long-on for 48 off 35. At 108 for 4 in 14.5 overs, the projected score is 158.

Rayudu's scratchy innings ends

Ambati Rayudu's intent has been good but when a batter of his game ends up at a run a ball despite trying to hit out, you know that perhaps the pitch is not conducive to high strike rates. His dismissal is an example. He jumps out of the crease, and plays the lofted shot into the leg side, but hardly threatens to clear the boundary. Caught at wide long-on off Washington Sundar. Shivam Dube is the new man in at 98 for 3 in 13.3 overs. Projected score 162.

Seven an over still

SRH keep the pressure on with tight bowling, but it also seems to be a two-paced pitch, which means despite trying to hit out, CSK are stuck firmly at seven an over after 12 overs. Rayudu and Moeen are going at about a run a ball, and have faced around 25 balls each. Projected score remains 159.

Middle-overs struggle

Kane Williamson has gone after Ambati Rayudu and Moeen Khan with the high pace of Umran Malik and the spin of Washington Sundar. Overs seven and eight yield nothing, but in the ninth over the duo manages to hit a boundary each. Still they are only going at seven an over. Projected score 159.

Near yorker with new ball

T Natarajan joins fellow Tamil Nadu player Washington Sundar in taking a wicket first ball. And what a pearler it is. Really full, swinging in, and late. Almost a yorker. Rururaj Gaekwad hasn't covered the swing, and presents a gap for the ball to bowl him. CSK 36 for 2 in 7.1 overs. Projected score 161

Washington Sundar strikes first ball

Washington Sundar gets a relatively new ball in the fourth over, is given a big leg-side boundary and starts with a long-on and deep midwicket. Robin Uthappa still takes him on, but makes the mistake of playing for the turn. Sundar has bowled smartly and wide outside off, and the lack of turn means Uthappa can only hole out to long-on. CSK 25 for 1 in 3.1 overs. Projected score 167

SRH chase even in afternoon game

There might been a suggestion SRH might want to bat first because that happens to be their traditional strength and there is little dew in afternoon games. They still got ahead and decide to chase despite having lost their last two games chasing. There are two changes in their side: Marco Jansen and Shashank Singh come in for Romario Shepherd and Abdul Samad.
CSK would have fielded themselves. They have made one change> maheesh Theekshana in for Dwaine Pretorious.
Chennai Super Kings 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Ravindra Jadeja (capt.), 6 Shivam Dube, 7 MS Dhoni (wk), 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Chris Jordan, 11 Mukesh Choudhary

Time to win something

One of these teams will get on board today. It is more desperate for CSK, who have lost three matches. SRH have lost two, but three losses, you would think, puts you one step short of must-win territory. Welcome to Match 17 of IPL 2022.
