wide line, hacked down through deep backward point, and Bangladesh beat the World Champions in style!
Bangladesh vs England, 1st T20I at Chattogram, BAN v ENG, Mar 09 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
6.36pm So that's a wrap from the 'gram. Bangladesh boast a 100% winning record against England in bilateral T20Is. Can they carry this into Sunday's second game in Dhaka? From Miller, Alan and Ranjith, good night!
Sanyat T: "I'm a fan who has seen the worst of heartbreaks. I have no high hope for this BD team yet. But I'm happy about how the BPL performers have done in this match. Let's see how the rest of the matches go. I hope that this is a start of something exciting. "
Jos Buttler: "Bangladesh finished the innings well, we were in a position to kick on but were 20 short. Had to chase it in the field. Low bounce and a little slow but stayed consistent throughout the game. Bangladesh took the game on and put us under pressure. A different balanced team to what we sometimes play, blessed with options and a nice position to be in."
Sure enough, Shanto is Player of the Match: "Towhid batted well, I just watched the ball and played cricketing shots. Not too worried about losing two wickets. The way the bowlers bowled was outstanding, Especially Hasan and Taskin. Rony and Litton set up very well, all about starting in T20 cricket."
Shakib Al Hasan: "The way we approached the game was fantastic, under the pump in first ten overs but no-one panicked. Stuck to the plans. Other than my dropped catch, everyone fielded well. In T20 when you don't think too much you tend to play well. Hopefully we can keep this in the dressing-room. This is a great start, for WC in 2024 in West Indies. We will be able to put out a very good team when World Cup starts."
6.27pm Apparently the dignitaries are praying, so the presentation has been delayed a touch.
Tauhidul: "You should add fielding impact in the MVP calculation, Shanto deserves to be on top after his impact in the field today." I suspect he's a fine shout for Player of the Match regardless.
6.13pm That is a very fine victory for Bangladesh, set up by some exceptional bowling in the second half of England's innings - including four wickets for 11 runs in 20 crucial balls - and taken home in style by an aggressive batting line-up, led by Shanto's 27-ball fifty, and sealed by their skipper, Shakib Al Hasan. A useful debut from Hridoy too, and food for thought for Jos Buttler.
Remarkably, that is Bangladesh's first victory over England in T20Is. Even more remarkably, they've only played each other twice!
England's limited options in their 13-man squad meant they were understocked with batters, and overloaded with bowling options. Seven men used today, only one of whom bowled a full allocation of overs.
Azeez: "Without a doubt Bangladesh are 2nd strongest Asian team when it comes to playing at home "
kayser imtiaz: "Possibly the only scoreboard in t20 , where all bd batsmen score more than the ball they faced and that is the beauty of confidence and win"
Afeef: "Even though they were without many first-choice players, the T20 World Cup winners still have plenty of talent in their squad. So this is a very special win for Bangladesh."
round the wicket, angled bat into the legs, clipped to the on-side
wider line, has a thrash out through deep point, another single to the cover sweeper
full length, outside off, no contact on the dab
kneels into the full length, and launched! Pressing forward with eagerness, over mid-off, and this one is all but cooked now
RobP: "England need a couple of wickers here. PS, I've just graduated with a first in stating the bleeding obvious" My heartiest congratulations. A long career awaits
round the wicket, back of a length, tapped to the on-side
The floodlights in full beam now. Any late twists in store?
Arfaa: "As a BD fan, I'm just very happy that the leading performers of the BPL (Shanto, Talukder, Towhid, Hasan Mahmud) are doing well internationally. In the past, the BPL stars have usually failed to live up to expectations on the international stage. "
more pace on that one, back of a length, fenced down to deep third. Bangladesh see off the threat with ease, and it's a very tantalising ten to win
slower and slottable from Archer! That just floated down into the arc of an impeccable cover-drive! Opening the face and lacerating the off-side field!
pace off from Archer, the cutter, and Shakib claws his pull with an open stance, to the leg side
nudged off the legs once more, more control on this one, using the angle from round the wicket
hurried on the pull, but safe! In the air for an eternity, two men converged at deep square but it bissected them perfectly. Flicked off the hip but more oomph in that length from Archer than he had bargained for
round the wicket, just a regulation length ball from Archer, targetting the top of off and tapped down to backward point
Back comes Archer. Another massive moment in this match. Potentially England's last real chance
on the back foot, punched into the off side. No run there, but Bangladesh are well ahead now
short from Moeen, Shakib rocks back, slams the back-to-back boundary through the covers! Precious runs, that's chewed up the requirement
compact and effective! Up and over the bowler with a full face of the blade, eased through the length.
full again, down on the sweep, half an appeal as England mull the lbw. It was adjacent to the stumps but potentially outside the line, and likely to have involved bat
very full, straightening into the pads, tucked to the on-side from back on the stumps
slow from round the wicket again, more turn away from Shakib, cuffed off the back foot
Jordan's over at least kept the rate in check. Moeen for his last over now
flicks the pad on a full length across the left-hander, Buttler gathers down the leg side and that's a decent over in the end
takes a leading edge as Jordan spears in the fuller length, at the pads. Falls short in his followthrough
Over 18 • BAN 158/4
Bangladesh won by 6 wickets (with 12 balls remaining)
