A sharp right-arm seamer who specialises in moving the ball away from the right-handers, Vikum Sanjaya caught the national selectors' notice in December 2016 with figures of 7 for 102 in a first-class match for Burgher Recreation Club.

He had not, however, been especially effective in domestic cricket before his national call-up for the tour of South Africa. In 17 first-class matches, he had taken 38 wickets at an average of 33.78, and he had only played 13 List A games. Nevertheless, the selectors said they saw potential in him - a sentiment echoed by coaches, who had picked him out and trained him in the fast bowling academy since soon after Sanjaya left school.

Sanjaya made his first-class debut in 2012 for Colombo Cricket Club, but has also played for Badureliya Sports Club and Saracens Sports Club, in addition to BRC.
