He made 299 first-class appearances for the county, taking 843 wickets with a best of 9 for 60 in a victory over Yorkshire at Hove. He twice took 100 wickets in a season. He was also useful with the bat and scored 3,411 first-class runs, often helping Sussex out of a precarious position. Originally from Buckinghamshire, he made his Sussex debut in 1948 and was awarded his county cap in 1950 and remained a regular until 1958. After leaving Sussex, he was a popular coach at Eastbourne College for many years.
