Wicketkeeper-batsman Lauren Winfield was called up to the England Academy squad in 2013 after impressive performances in the Super 4s competition and for Yorkshire in the Women's County Championship. She made her ODI debut the same year against Pakistan, batting at 7, and made 16 runs across the two-match series.

She retained her place for the tour of West Indies later that year, and was promoted to open the batting, making 31 in the second ODI. Since then she has had chances to open in all three formats, including in her Test debut against India in 2014. She made 35 in the second innings and opened once again against the Australians at Canterbury in 2015, but with less success, making 1 and 12.

She has looked most convincing in the 20-over format, making 74 against South Africa in 2014 to take England to a 3-0 series whitewash.

Appointed Yorkshire captain at the start of the 2014 season, in 2015 she oversaw her team to its first Championship victory since 2002, averaging 95 across the season. However, she struggled to translate this success into the international arena and was omitted from the 2016 World Twenty20 squad.

Nonetheless, new coach Mark Robinson retained his faith in her; and he was richly rewarded during the 2016 summer series against Pakistan, when Winfield finally broke through in the second game at Worcester and scored 123. She went on to share a record T20 stand of 147 with fellow opener Tammy Beaumont in the first T20 at Bristol, the highest ever by England in women's T20Is. Raf Nicholson
