A product of Sedbergh School, where he learnt his cricket alongside his fellow rising star Harry Brook, George Hill debuted for Yorkshire at Under-14 level, and joined their Academy in 2016. however, his breakthrough season came in 2022, when he scored three hundreds (two in the Championship and one in List A) including a best of 151 not out against Northamptonshire. By the end of the summer, he was batting at No. 3, and even claimed a remarkable 6 for 26 against Lancashire with his rapidly improving seamers.

All-rounder Hill was named England U19 vice-captain for the 2020 World Cup, having stepped up to lead the side several times in 2019 in the absence of George Balderson. He toured Bangladesh with England U19s in early 2019, scoring 91 in the second Youth Test and averaging 42 in the series. His starring role in 2019, however, was as 12th man for England in his home county and supplying Ben Stokes with the replacement bat that took the hosts to an unlikely victory in the third Test at Headingley.
