The younger brother of former Test player Andrew McDonald, Brenton McDonald is a legspinning allrounder who emerged from his sibling's shadow by winning the Jack Ryder Medal as the best player in Melbourne's premier cricket competition in 2012-13. That summer, he had scored 568 runs at 46.39 and collected 54 wickets at 15.98 to help Melbourne to the premiership. But opportunities for Victorian spinners were limited and in 2013-14 he made his state debut for South Australia in the Ryobi Cup, having played a solitary BBL match for the Melbourne Renegades in 2011-12.
