He went on to make his first-class debut at 18, playing for Central Districts since March 2010. He was selected for New Zealand's tour of England in 2014, where he replaced an injured Trent Boult in the series' third game to make his ODI debut, picking up three wickets for 63 runs. He played two ODIs in Zimbabwe and South Africa later that year before being overlooked for New Zealand's squad for the World Cup. In December 2016, Wheeler was selected for New Zealand's 14-man T20 squad against Bangladesh following a solid showing in the domestic T20 competition.
