Due to the "ever-increasing amount of cricket to report", Norman Preston was forced to introduce a few changes to the 1960 edition, which went up by over two shillings to dangerously close to a pound. Bowling analyses were presented in a different, more concise form, and there was less-detailed reporting on overseas cricket as the English summer was so crowded. Issues such as throwing, or "Throw and Drag", and the standard of umpiring were discussed in detail. Neville Cardus reflected on the careers on five big names who had retired, including Godfrey Evans and Jim Laker. Collie Smith, the West Indies allrounder, died in a car crash - that also involved Garry Sobers - in Stoke-on-Trent.
