This three-match one-day series had long been part of the Future Tours Programme, although it might never have happened if agreement of the final details in February 2014 had not coincided with the need to get the Bangladesh board on-side for the planned radical reforms of the ICC. As part of the wheeler-dealing, India agreed to make two further tours in the next six years - and, in 2015, Bangladesh should finally be allowed the holy grail of a Test match in India.

But the timing of this series was poor. Bangladesh in June is like England in October: it is probably going to rain. This was only the third time international cricket had been attempted in the monsoon season, and predictably enough all three matches were affected; the third could not be completed even with the help of Duckworth/Lewis.

India rested several regulars, including M. S. Dhoni and his usual understudy Virat Kohli, so Suresh Raina led a side including three uncapped players. "I didn't expect them to take this series so lightly," said Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh's captain. Still, the depleted Indians took the rubber, clinching it by humbling Bangladesh for 58 in the second match after being bowled out for just 105.

Stuart Binny took the cheapest six-for in one-day internationals in that remarkable game, clinching his selection for the England tour that followed. India's rejigged batting misfired, however, apart from a bright opening stand between Robin Uthappa and Ajinkya Rahane in the first match. Bangladesh's main gain was with the ball, as teenage fast bowler Taskin Ahmed made an eye-catching debut. Shakib Al Hasan was his usual savvy self, but Tamim Iqbal - out for nought and four - was one of several batting disappointments.
