Australia's openers provided another excellent start. But the real impetus was injected by Bailey and Maxwell, who hit three sixes in an entertaining 23-ball stay. The tail crashed 38 from the last three overs, and only Bhuvneshwar Kumar's early control and an economic spell from Jadeja kept Australia to 304. All Australia's frontline bowlers were tight, and Johnson was monstrously fast with the new ball. Kohli and Raina, granted the promotion he had craved to No. 4, managed to keep India in the game with a 71-run stand for the third wicket but, after they were separated, India went down with surprising ease. It took some tactical ingenuity to dislodge Kohli, India's chaser extraordinaire: set up by three shortish balls, he tried to hoick Watson's next delivery, a fuller one, across the line - and was struck in front. Hughes kept wicket for 23 overs after the dismissal of Dhawan: Faulkner's celebratory high-five caught Haddin in the eye, and he left for treatment one ball later.
