New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

At Napier, February 29, 2012 (day/night). South Africa won by six wickets. Toss: South Africa.

New Zealand were delighted by de Villiers's decision to bowl on a perfect pitch at the country's highest-scoring ground. But their wastefulness four days earlier was nothing compared to this. They were 131 for one in the 25th over; 300 seemed not just possible, but likely. Then the wily Kallis removed Guptill, the skilful Tsotsobe claimed the next two, and the brutal Morne Morkel collected the last five for a career-best. Steyn was just as important; it was a mystery that he dismissed only Ryder - albeit for a second-ball duck. Also instrumental was the captaincy of de Villiers, who held his nerve against the measured, potentially dangerous early batting of Guptill and McCullum. He never opted for containment, deploying at least one strike bowler and at least one extra fielder in the 30-metre circle at all times. Amla was denied a century by a cunning deception from leg-spinner Nethula, who was New Zealand's only bright spot but unflattered by his figures.

Man of the Match: M. Morkel.
