New Zealand v South Africa, 2011-12

At Auckland, February 22, 2012 (floodlit). South Africa won by three runs. Toss: New Zealand.

New Zealand lost an un-loseable game - or at least it should have been. They needed 25 runs from the final five overs with seven wickets in hand, and just 17 from four overs with six left. But Ryder became inexplicably becalmed to signal the beginning of the choke. He scored only four from his last 15 balls, admittedly against some skilled bowling from Morne Morkel and, particularly, Botha, who sent down the 17th and 19th overs at a combined cost of five runs. The remaining batsmen lost their heads entirely, swinging wildly at everything. De Lange had seven runs to defend in the final over and claimed two wickets for three, despite bowling a no-ball with his sixth delivery. That meant Southee needed four off the last ball, a free hit, but - in keeping with New Zealand's haplessness - he failed to score.

Man of the Match: J. Botha.
