Sri Lanka v India, 2012

Rex Clementine

At Colombo (RPS), July 28, 2012 (day/night). India won by five wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.

After poor crowds in Hambantota, the Sri Lankan authorities were relieved to see a packed house at the 35,000-seater Premadasa Stadium. And when their side recovered from a poor start to reach 286, locals thought the game was secure: Sri Lanka had never previously lost a one-day international at home after scoring more than 250 batting first, while chasing under lights here had historically proved difficult. Sehwag fell quickly, but Gambhir's run-a-ball hundred - his 11th in one-day internationals, and sixth against Sri Lanka - kept India in touch. When he departed in the 39th over, Sri Lanka were still favourites, but Raina and Pathan piled on 92 without further loss to complete victory with two balls to spare. Defeat was hard enough to take for the home team, but then came news that Sangakkara's little finger had been broken by a bouncer from Dinda.

Man of the Match: S. K. Raina.
