Sri Lanka in South Africa, 2011-12

Firdose Moonda

At Bloemfontein, January 17, 2012 (day/night). South Africa won by four runs (D/L method). Toss: Sri Lanka.

South Africa won the series with two games to spare, although improvements in Sri Lanka's batting and energy in the field ignited proceedings. The tourists' score was crafted from a solid opening partnership - with Dilshan getting off the mark for the first time in the series - and contributions by the middle order. With South Africa stuttering at 52 for three, 266 looked enough. The Russian roulette No. 4 position this time went the way of du Plessis, who responded with a brisk 72, despite battling cramps. But his run-out, and that of Duminy, incredulous at the TV umpire's decision, resulted in a tense passage of play as showers brewed. De Villiers, though, kept abreast of the run-rate to ensure South Africa were in front when the heavens opened - thus preventing a repeat of a rather more famous rain-affected match between these sides in the 2003 World Cup.

Man of the Match: F. du Plessis.
