Misbah-ul-Haq's eighth half-century in nine international innings secured a narrow win for Pakistan with an over to spare after New Zealand fought back twice - first with bat, then with ball. Some indiscreet strokeplay had reduced them to 79 for five, a far cry from the 330 cited in advance by Vettori as a match-winning total. But Franklin, selected on the morning of the game when Ryder, omitted in Christchurch, was now pronounced unfit, restored sanity, adding 62 with Brendon McCullum, then 64 with McCullum's brother, Nathan, who completed a pugnacious maiden one- day fifty. Aided by a total of 19 wides, the New Zealanders at least had something to play with. Three catches by Taylor, the first - to dismiss Mohammad Hafeez - a screamer high above his head at first slip, slowed the Pakistan reply, only for the familiar pair of Younis Khan and Misbah to turn the tide, in a stand of 89 that ended when Younis slipped trying to regain his ground. Wickets fell regularly, but Misbah - en route to a one-day best - held his nerve and found a sanguine ally in Sohail Tanvir, who belted 14 off the 49th over, bowled by Southee.
