Ajantha Mendis, brought in to bolster Sri Lanka's spin department on the pitch used for the first match, returned the best figures in 203 Twenty20 internationals after Australia, whose openers raced to 71 by the sixth over, had threatened to make light work of Sri Lanka's total. Two balls after Watson, who reached his half-century in 20 deliveries, had slog-swept Mendis for his fifth six, he was caught at long-off attempting a sixth, at which point Australia unravelled against a smorgasbord of googlies and carrom balls. Mendis claimed six for six in 17 balls, including Warner, caught by Jayawardene after Mathews had initially clung on at deep midwicket, then hurled the ball infield seconds before losing his balance and stepping over the boundary. Mendis's figures meant Jayawardene's sparkling 63-ball innings, which included 12 fours and a six, did not go to waste.
