Bangladesh v Australia in Bangladesh, 2010-11

At Mirpur, April 9, 2011. Australia won by 60 runs. Toss: Bangladesh.

Clarke's expertly compiled century in his first match as Australia's first-choice captain formed the spine of a total that proved beyond Bangladesh, who chose to preserve wickets instead of mounting a genuine pursuit. Sent in, the Australians were grateful for Clarke's busyness - only 36 of his runs came in boundaries, two of them sixes - on a pitch that posed questions for new batsmen. Watson and Ponting were fluent but squandered starts, while Haddin was bowled backing away to leg. White (50 balls for 20) and Hussey struggled for touch, which made Clarke's contribution the more laudable. He reached his hundred in the final over with a meaty pulled six off Mashrafe bin Mortaza, while Johnson clattered a pair of sixes as 48 runs came from the last 29 balls. Despite stolid half- centuries from Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh never seemed likely to make a sustained challenge from the unsteady platform of nine for two, and their reluctance to take risks felt like a hangover from a disappointing World Cup.
