South Africa v West Indies 2007-08

At Cape Town, January 25, 2008 (day/night). South Africa won by 86 runs. Toss: South Africa.

Smith hit an emphatic 86 from 107 balls to offset a double strike from the impressive Taylor, who had reduced South Africa to 18 for two. De Villiers provided impish impetus in the powerplays before Duminy, for the second match running, batted through the middle overs almost to the end - although the final over was something of a disaster, three wickets falling for just one run. West Indies were never in the hunt: Pollock was virtually unplayable - at least that's how the batsmen made him look - and his opening spell of 7-3-10-1 put the run-chase so far behind the asking- rate that the result was obvious before the powerplay overs had finished. Chanderpaul's 83-ball 54 was so introspective that one former West Indian player was moved to comment that he had "disrespected the game". With nine an over required, Chanderpaul played out a maiden in Pollock's second spell, giving him astonishing overall figures. The bulk of the wickets, however, went to Morne Morkel, who used his height to great effect, taking four wickets with back-of-a-length lifters.

Man of the Match: S. M. Pollock.
