New Zealand's 500th one-day international was a memorable one, and they reached the semi- finals. It was a big match for Fleming, leading his country for the 194th time, beating the old record of Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga: he also surpassed Ranatunga's 5,606 runs as a one-day captain during his measured 80, which - along with Styris's chancy 86 - calmed Kiwi nerves after the top order had been blown away in seaming conditions. The bowling at the end was less impressive, and New Zealand's tail carted 89 off the last eight overs, with not a single yorker to be seen. Still, Pakistan seemed in control during their chase, but with 99 needed from 14 overs Bond returned for his third spell and removed Mohammad Yousuf to make a mess of their plans. In an experiment to negate the dew, the ICC had agreed to spray a chemical, APSA-80, over the outfield, but the bowlers actually benefited from the film on the pitch, gaining appreciable bounce and lateral movement - and Bond and his cronies ensured that New Zealand were the first team to make sure of qualification.
