At Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, October 14, 2006 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by nine wickets. Sri Lanka 2 pts. Toss: West Indies.

A feckless display by West Indies led to a scorecard that appeared to be partially written in binary. Maharoof, who had never previously taken more than four wickets in a one-day innings, finished with six for 14, the best figures in any Champions Trophy match. Even he was at a slight loss to explain it, saying only: "I kept it simple." But simple, with a touch of seam movement, was enough on a pitch so slow that the wicketkeepers took many balls on the second bounce. Once Vaas and Malinga reduced West Indies to 13 for three, Maharoof produced a succession of low, straight balls that brought the batsman forward. Hinds resisted for 86 balls, but a string of frustrated heaves and half-hearted swipes led to wickets tumbling at the other end. The result put West Indies into what appeared to be the tougher qualifying group, alongside Australia, India and England.

Man of the Match: M. F. Maharoof.
