Third One-Day International

Bangladesh v Australia, 2005-06

Nabila Ahmed

At Fatullah, April 28, 2006. Australia won by nine wickets. Toss: Bangladesh. One-day international debut: M. J. Cosgrove.

The chunky Mark Cosgrove - along with the other tyros, Dan Cullen and Mitchell Johnson - gave Australia a nine-wicket victory, a clean sweep of the tour, and a glimpse of the future. Six months earlier, Cosgrove had been sent home by his state side to lose weight; now, getting his debut as Ponting rested, he blasted Australia towards a scant target. He bulldozed 74 in 69 balls with lethal back-foot drives and pulls, lifting Rajin Saleh for two massive sixes. A sharp and disciplined Johnson had trapped Shahriar Nafees with the third ball of the day, and only the stubborn Rajin and Habibul Bashar resisted: seven of their colleagues scrounged 11 runs between them.

Man of the Match: M. J. Cosgrove. Man of the Series: G. B. Hogg.
