Match 9, West Indies v Pakistan

VB Series, (A/ P/ WI) 2004-05

Daniel Brettig

At Perth, February 1, 2005. Pakistan won by 30 runs. Pakistan 5 pts, West Indies 1 pt. Toss: West Indies.

With a place in the finals at stake, Pakistan held their nerve. West Indies' pace bowlers started off tightly; halfway through, Pakistan were only 102 for three. Then Inzamam-ul-Haq and Yousuf Youhana, who hit 105 in 100 balls, upped the ante with deft placements and the odd angry shot, Shahid Afridi hit his regulation pair of sixes, and they topped 300. The industrious Naved-ul- Hasan dismissed both West Indian openers, and when Lara skied to mid-on Pakistan's fans were dancing. Sarwan and Chanderpaul forced them back to their seats, adding a brisk 95. Even after a polished stumping removed Sarwan, the target came tantalisingly close, but a bold chase petered out when Hinds fell to a running catch by Inzamam. Pakistani celebrations were once again muted by a bereavement, this time the death of Naved's father.

Man of the Match: Yousuf Youhana. Attendance: 5,501.
