South Africa v Zimbabwe

At Port Elizabeth, March 2, 2005 (day/night). South Africa won by five wickets. Toss: Zimbabwe.

Thirty-six hours before the game, Heath Streak landed in South Africa to reinforce Zimbabwe's squad, ending the 11-month stand-off between the board and its top white players after his removal as captain. He found himself walking to the crease in the 13th over, with Zimbabwe 35 for five; this time, Taibu had chosen not to hide, but his decision to bat was backfiring. Boje, however, backed off rather than attacking, an uninspired piece of first-time captaincy as Smith's deputy. Despite feeling "nervous and a bit rusty", Streak scraped together 68, enabling Zimbabwe to push past 200, and went on to remove de Villiers in his second over. Medium-pacer Mupariwa found some swing to reduce South Africa to 79 for four, which should have been five: Kemp edged his first ball to the keeper undetected by umpire Howell. For half an hour, the tourists knew what felt like to compete. But Kemp used his fortune to score a match-winning 78 from 81 balls.

Man of the Match: J. M. Kemp.

Man of the Series: G. C. Smith. Attendance: 6,385.
