Sri Lanka ripped up the script in sensational fashion to outclass the home side with bat and ball. The match began amid suggestions it would be decided by the toss because of the expected onset of dew in the second innings. But in reality the dew was minimal, and Jayasuriya took full advantage of a turning pitch and some increasingly nervous Pakistan batting to record his fourth five-wicket haul in one-day internationals. Sri Lanka owed their total to a partnership of 106 in 118 balls between Atapattu and Sangakkara and late impetus from Dilshan, who already knew he had been left out of the squad for the Test series that followed. In all, 85 runs came from the final ten overs. Sangakkara became the first player to reach 1,000 one-day international runs in the calendar year when he reached 59. In an unfortunate postscript, Shoaib Malik was reported to the ICC by the match referee Jeff Crowe for having a potentially flawed action.
