Wisden
Third One-Day International

Zimbabwe v Australia

Malcolm Conn

At Harare, May 29, 2004. Australia won by eight wickets. Toss: Australia. One-day international debut: E. C. Rainsford.

Another revamped Australian batting line-up coasted to victory with almost 20 overs to spare. Gillespie took the first five wickets with a devastating spell of pace, and Zimbabwe were 61 for six before a stand of 114 between Chigumbura and Nkala salvaged some respectability. Gillespie finished the series with seven wickets, in contrast to the recovering McGrath, who managed just one in three games. Another Australian making a comeback was Watson: this was his first international for 16 months after back problems, and he was there at the end, but the winning runs came from Clarke, the exciting young batsman from New South Wales. Promoted to open, he blazed a maiden international century, an unbeaten 105 in just 102 balls.

Man of the Match: J. N. Gillespie. Man of the Series: J. N. Gillespie.
