First One-Day International

Sri Lanka v South Africa

Brian Murgatroyd

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, August 20, 2004 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by three wickets. Toss: South Africa. One-day international debut: J-P. Duminy.

A confident Sri Lanka achieved their highest successful run-chase at Premadasa when the recalled Lokuarachchi clipped Pollock for six. For South Africa, by contrast, it was a sixth successive oneday defeat. The turning point of the match came when a well-set Kallis was given out caught and bowled after only the bowler, Chandana, appealed. Most assumed it had been a bump ball; television replays suggested otherwise. In his 150th one-day international, Gibbs was again beaten by Vaas's in-swing.

Man of the Match: W. P. U. J. C. Vaas.
