South Africa v West Indies

Tony Cozier and John Ward

At Port Elizabeth, January 28, 2004 (day/night). South Africa won by 16 runs. Toss: South Africa.

West Indies' most disciplined bowling and fielding performance of the tour restricted South Africa to 179 for seven before three suicidal run-outs denied them the chance of levelling the series. Dippenaar scored 83 to stabilise South Africa's innings but, even in conditions encouraging seam and swing, their total was modest. Then Lara, demoting himself to No. 5, was cut short by a direct underarm hit from Rudolph as he sought an improbable single to mid-off. The dawdling Sarwan was run out by Boucher's throw at the bowler's stumps, and Jacobs gambled with Gibbs's alacrity and lost. Only a last-wicket stand of 37 between Rampaul and Collymore, the highest of the innings, got West Indies anywhere near their target.

Man of the Match: H. H. Dippenaar. Attendance: 16,976.
