Obituaries in 1968

JAI, L. P., who died on January 29, aged 66, was in his day among the leading Indian batsmen. He scored 1,278 runs, average 31.95, for Hindus in the Quadrangular (later Pentangular) Tournament, with 156 against the Muslims in 1924 the highest of his three centuries; and he captained the side when they won the Pentangular Tournament in 1941. He hit 774 runs, average 43.00, in Ranji Trophy matches for Bombay, whom he led to victory in the competition in 1934-35. His one Test match appearance for India was against A. E. R. Gilligan's England team in 1933, and he toured England with little success in 1936. He had been vice-president of the Bombay Cricket Association and a Test selector.
