South Africa were spirited to the brink of victory by McKenzie. He arrived at 42 for three and wrought order from muddle, putting on 63 with Rudolph and 107 with Boucher. Playing like Michael Bevan in a green shirt, he swept neatly and filched singles to keep the asking-rate in sight and then struck the killer blows. Earlier, South Africa had maintained a cool-headed discipline in the field, despite temperatures hitting 45°C. The pressure built and Indian wickets finally fell in a clatter: from 146 for three they lost six for 46, proving equally clumsy against Ntini's hostile pace and Dawson's niggling swing. On a pitch with a touch of green, Salvi bowled with some hostility and Harbhajan Singh struck twice in his first four balls. But rather than set up a victory for India, it only set the scene for McKenzie.
