Fifth One-Day International

South Africa v Pakistan

At Cape Town, December 18, 2002 (day/night). South Africa won by 34 runs. Toss: South Africa.

The last match was the closest of the series and Pakistan had every chance when they needed 79 in 11 overs with six wickets in hand. But a series of Kallis away-swingers made sure they finished with a stagger rather than a sprint. Earlier, South Africa had slumped to an uncertain 61 for three, before Dippenaar and Rhodes took charge. Dippenaar pushed and prodded with his usual caution, but Rhodes ran him hard between the wickets, and runs piled up steadily, especially against the spinners. Boucher inflicted the worst of the late damage, belting 34 from 16 balls, with four sixes. Pakistan looked destined for another routine defeat at 81 for four, before Inzamamul- Haq and Younis Khan added 108.

Man of the Match: J. N. Rhodes. Attendance: 15,772.
Man of the Series: S. M. Pollock.
