South Africa v Zimbabwe

At Cardiff, July 5. South Africa won by nine wickets.
South Africa 6 pts. Toss: South Africa.

The match was all but over as a contest when Zimbabwe's fragile top order failed to come to terms with a lively pitch after being put in to bat. Streak showed what was possible with a defiant, hard-hitting half-century, but a total of 174 was never likely to trouble South Africa. In their reply, Streak was convinced he had the out-of-form Gibbs caught behind for nought, but umpire Willey was unmoved and Gibbs went on to regain his touch with an unbeaten 93 off 96 balls. One of his two sixes, a back-foot force over cover off the medium-pace of Friend, showed that he had lost none of his audacity. Smith ground down the bowling at the other end, and after the pair had put on 154 at five an over, van Jaarsveld helped complete the formalities with more than 15 overs in hand.

Man of the Match: H. H. Gibbs. Attendance: 2,574; receipts £32,849.
