England v South Africa

At Manchester, July 3 (day/night). South Africa won by seven wickets. South Africa 5 pts, England 1 pt. Toss: England.

Kallis's bid to become only the fourth player to make hundreds in three successive one-day internationals (after his team-mate Gibbs and the Pakistanis Zaheer Abbas and Saeed Anwar) narrowly failed. But few of his team-mates were complaining after he and Rudolph overturned the notion that batting under lights is a disadvantage. Kallis had to be content with an unbeaten 82 off 105 balls, which took his average for the tournament to an astonishing 314, and a match-winning stand of 145 with Rudolph, whose undefeated 71 off 101 was every bit as accomplished. On a day when the stretch of Warwick Road running outside the ground was officially renamed in honour of Brian Statham, the late England and Lancashire fast bowler, Pollock produced an opening spell of 7- 4-5-1 of which Statham would surely have approved. England's innings had stagnated after the departure of Trescothick, before Read and Giles gave them some hope with a brisk eighth-wicket stand of 47.

Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 18,575; receipts £447,357.
