The Khaleej Times Trophy, match 4

Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe

At Sharjah, October 30 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 79 runs. Sri Lanka 5 pts. Toss: Sri Lanka.

For the third time, Zimbabwe pursued over 250, and for the third time their chase degenerated into an ungainly stagger towards respectability. Earlier, their bowlers had fought back with spirit after Jayasuriya chose to bat and nonchalantly caned 11 from Streak's opening over. Streak and swing bowler Brent took three early wickets, but the support struggled with their line as the right-left combination of Jayawardene and Arnold added 111. For the second match running, Murphy felt forced to use eight bowlers. Zimbabwe's reply was too laboured to threaten; Gripper set the tone with a 60-ball 26. The man he replaced as opener, Marillier, produced a sprightly unbeaten fifty at No. 6, but nothing could prevent Zimbabwe falling further and further behind.

Man of the Match: D. P. M. D. Jayawardene.
