Sixth one-day international

South Africa v Australia

At Port Elizabeth, April 6. Australia won by three wickets. Toss: South Africa.

Even South Africa's biggest one-day total against Australia wasn't enough when the tourists rewrote the record books with the highest run-chase in history. Sri Lanka had scored 329 batting second against West Indies at Sharjah in 1995-96, only to lose; Australia's 330 for seven put them 5-0 up. South Africa had amassed 326 for three, thanks to an impressive 84 from the precocious Smith and an explosive partnership of 131 in 92 balls between Kallis and Rhodes. But the Australian openers raced past 50 in the fifth over, and Gilchrist reached his own half-century in just 27 balls. Three quick wickets should have halted the momentum. Instead it only brought Ponting and Lehmann together to pile on 183 in 30 overs. Both missed their hundreds, but Australia passed the target with five balls to spare when Warne blazed to the boundary. An aggregate of 656 was the fourth-highest in all one-day internationals.

Man of the Match: A. C. Gilchrist.
