Australia v South Africa

At Melbourne, January 13 (day/night). South Africa won by four wickets. South Africa 4 pts. Toss: Australia.

Rhodes and McKenzie did what was required for victory and absolutely no more: Rhodes took 101 balls to accumulate 43 - a glacial rate of progress in the one-day game - and hit no boundaries; McKenzie scored 34 in 59 balls. But South Africa could afford to leave the fireworks in the box. Australia scored only 63 runs in the first 15 overs, and just 58 after the 35th; in between, two run-outs accounted for Bevan and Ponting, who might have added some oomph to Steve Waugh's nurdling. Pollock bowled typically straight with the new ball and at the death. South Africa's openers raised 50 in quick time, before Gillespie sparked a mini collapse. But with McGrath suspended, Australia were unable to put Rhodes under pressure.

Man of the Match: S. M. Pollock.
