Winning with a bonus point, Sri Lanka went to the top of the table. They were inspired by a characteristic innings from de Silva, working the field to keep the scoreboard ticking over and hitting just four boundaries in his 73. Fernando and spinner Chandana made key contributions to a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling performance, allowing Jayasuriya the luxury of not introducing Muralitharan until the 24th over - by which time the South Africans were already five wickets down and struggling.
