Collingwood, whose three one-day international wickets had cost 101 each, surprised even himself by finding prodigious swing under the McLean Park lights. He took four for 38 and ran through New Zealand's middle order with little apparent effort. While Fleming was in quiet control, New Zealand were on course to seal a series win but, at 128 for three in the 30th over, Vincent cut Collingwood to gully. Soon after, Cairns chipped to deep mid-wicket, and only Fleming held his nerve in the ensuing panic. England started convincingly, with three half-century partnerships: Trescothick finally took the attack to New Zealand with a flashy 41, Knight played the anchor role and Thorpe added an imaginative run-a-ball fifty. Even so, on a ground with enticingly short square boundaries, 244 felt 20 below par. But Astle was given out caught behind despite failing to make contact, and Hoggard completed a searching ten-over spell in the blink of an eye. Then Collingwood swung the game England's way to keep the series alive.
