England v India

At Chester-le-Street, July 4 (day/night). No result. England 2 pts, India 2 pts. Toss: India.

India's 500th one-day international turned into a damp squib after Tendulkar had lit up proceedings with a dazzling century. With India in trouble on a slow pitch at 52 for three, he moved serenely to his first fifty in 72 balls before expanding his repertoire - including a couple of reverse sweeps off Giles - to smash his second in just 34. It was his 32nd one-day international hundred, but his first against England in 22 attempts. Tendulkar added 169 for the fourth wicket with the more cautious Dravid, and a ferocious 64 in 33 balls with Yuvraj. But persistent drizzle meant England were unable to bat for the 25 overs needed for a result. Earlier, Gough had become only the third England bowler - after Ian Botham and Bob Willis - to take 400 wickets in all internationals when he trapped Ganguly with the first ball of the match.
