Zimbabwe v South Africa

At Harare, September 30. South Africa won by six wickets. Toss: Zimbabwe.

For the first time in this series, Zimbabwe had the advantage of the toss, but they timidly played for safety rather than launching a daring assault on a somewhat experimental bowling attack. Campbell and Carlisle scored at scarcely three an over in adding 67 for the second wicket, putting intolerable pressure on the later batsmen. Andy Flower sacrificed himself trying to boost the rate, and only his brother, with 28 off 31 balls, rose to the task. A total of 184 never looked defensible, especially against more spray-gun bowling from Zimbabwe (with the honourable exception of Brent). Dubious lbw decisions against Gibbs and Kemp disrupted South Africa's momentum, but McKenzie played with maturity to complete a clean sweep.

Man of the Match: N. D. McKenzie.
Man of the Series: H. H. Gibbs.
