Another dramatic finish brought another England defeat, this time by the slimmest of margins. Trescothick's maiden one-day international hundred and record England fourth-wicket partnership of 170 with Shah should have ensured victory. Instead, in a manner similar to their Test victory at Old Trafford eight days before, Pakistan fought back by claiming seven wickets in the final ten overs. An eventful final over from Saqlain Mushtaq, with nine runs needed, included a collision in the deep between Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik as the former caught Trescothick for 137 from 142 balls (three sixes, 11 fours) and ended with Caddick being stumped, trying to hit over the top. Deprived of Saeed Anwar through injury, Pakistan owed their relatively modest total to another disciplined half-century from Yousuf Youhana, while Azhar Mahmood again weighed in with powerful strokeplay down the order.
