The late crowd invasion, which delayed Pakistan's inevitable victory, rightly dominated the headlines, but it also served to overshadow England's inadequacies. Already weakened by the loss of Thorpe, captain Hussain and Caddick, England's inexperience told, with none of their seven bowlers able to restrict Pakistan's free-scoring batsmen. Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq propelled them to a challenging total with a 150-run partnership spanning 26 overs. Replying under the lights, England suffered in comparison as the regular fall of wickets forced Knight into an anchor role. Azhar Mahmood, having earlier hit an unbeaten 38 from 24 deliveries, exposed the lower middle-order with the help of two wonderful diving catches in the covers.
