The curtain went up on the NatWest Series to reveal a sea of light: some 7,000 spectators watched the first official day/night international in England, initially under afternoon sun, then under evening floodlights. With England themselves held back to attract the weekend crowds, the occasion marked Zimbabwe's first victory over West Indies after losing eight one-day internationals and two Tests. Jamaican left-handers Hinds and Gayle gave West Indies early impetus, built onby Lara and Powell, who blasted 36 from 23 balls, including five fours and a six. But a Zimbabwe attack without three first-choice bowlers worked tirelessly on a slow pitch and, helped by two excellent run-outs, restricted West Indies to a catchable 232. With Ambrose putting his feet up in the Caribbean and Walsh his on the physio's table, the Zimbabwean batsmen eagerly exploited the subsequent vacuum. Johnson was there throughout, his style determined by his partners - aggressive with Goodwin, who hit a run-a-ball 23, restrained with the Flowers - as they cruised home with five overs to spare. Among the varied interval distractions was a game of giant rollerball, similar in concept to the exercise bubble used by hamsters.
