South Africa v Australia 1999-2000

At Johannesburg, April 16. South Africa won by four wickets. Toss: South Africa.

In front of an enthusiastic capacity crowd, South Africa gained an exciting win in a day game that had to be completed under floodlights. Pollock bowled another outstanding opening spell to seize the initiative, Bevan and Steve Waugh survived dropped catches to stage a recovery, and the fighting eighth-wicket partnership of 52 between Harvey and Warne guaranteed a competitive target. South Africa lost two batsmen to an onslaught from McGrath and Brett Lee. But Hall and Kallis seemed to swing the match South Africa's way when they took 37 off four overs from Shanes Warne and Lee - including 20 off Warne's first two overs. Then came a dramatic change of fortune. Hall drove Warne to cover, whereupon Waugh brought back Brett Lee, who dismissed Kallis and Boje without further addition. From his last eight overs, Warne took two for ten: his second wicket, Rhodes, made just four from 29 deliveries. Boucher took time to start, but Klusener was soon on song for the 50-ball 52 that dominated their match-winning stand of 87.

Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Man of the Series: L. Klusener. Attendance: 30,888.
