Mushtaq Ahmed, who had bowled with immaculate control throughout the tournament, effectively decided its outcome with four cheap wickets. West Indies were all out inside 34 overs for 114, equalling England's total at Bridgetown in 1985-86 as the lowest in 92 one-day internationals in the Caribbean. Their humbling could hardly have been predicted when Campbell and Wallace were opening with 61 in 17 overs. But once they fell, at the same score, the innings disintegrated. Mushtaq Ahmed bamboozled Hinds, Gayle and Powell, the young Jamaicans, within five balls, while Shoaib Akhtar and Saqlain Mushtaq, making their first appearance in this series, grabbed two wickets apiece. Despite the meagre target, the home bowlers made Pakistan struggle; King, hostile and accurate, had them 19 for three in the tenth over. But Inzamam-ul-Haq steadied the innings, adding 42 with Younis Khan, and despite needing a runner after King's yorker cannoned into his heel, his calm assurance never wavered. Though he took 98 balls for his 39, he always had overs in hand.
