Australia v Pakistan 1999-2000

At Melbourne, January 16. Australia won by six wickets. Toss: Australia.

Pakistan made heavy weather of batting in humid, overcast conditions. Morning drizzle had delayed the start by two and a half hours, reducing the match to 41 overs a side, and the ball kicked off a length and swung prodigiously. Only two of their first seven reached double figures, and when three wickets fell in nine balls, Pakistan and the game were thankful for Abdur Razzaq's 54-ball half-century. Australia set off in a hurry, Mark Waugh and Gilchrist reaching 32 in four overs before Shoaib Akhtar reined them back with two wickets from his first four balls. Youhana ran out Mark Waugh in the seventh over, but brother Steve steadied the innings from 38 for three and was still there, 81 not out from 92 balls, when Australia eased home.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 37,325.
