Australia v India 1989-90

At Christchurch, March 3. Australia won by 18 runs. Toss: Australia. India should have won this match. With well-disciplined bowling, and giving their best exhibition of the summer in the field, they restricted Australia to 187 on a pitch of low bounce which helped the seam bowlers. Border's 37 from 49 balls was to prove the highest innings of the match. The loss of the first three Indian wickets for 23 seemed to signal an Australian victory, but Vengsarkar and Azhuraddin added 52 for the fourth wicket and put their side ahead of the run-rate. When India were six down for 154, with ample overs in hand, they should have gone on to win comfortably. Instead, in what was almost a reprise of the Christchurch Test, their batsmen threw their wickets away. There were still five overs to be bowled when the match ended.
