His only chance came when, at 50, he played back to Maguire and Wessels, in the gully, got his hands to the ball above his head. Mohsin was eventually fifth out just before the end of the first day, lbw playing forward to Lillee. He batted for 352 minutes, hitting eighteen 4s and one 6. A fine 83 by Imran helped Pakistan to reah 470. Australia, in reply, began unsurely, losing the openers for 70 on the second evening.

Next day, a record stand of 203 between Yallop and Hughes made sure that Australia did not lose the match, though it could have been different if Hughes had been caught in the gully by Safraz off Azeem when he was 14. Yallop, having recorded his first test 100 at Melbourne, went on to amass 268, the highest by anyone in matches between Australia and Pakistan and the seventh highest score by an Australian in Test cricket. When 166, he reached 1,000 runs for the season from just ten innings. ninth out after batting for 716 minutes and hitting 29 4s, Yallop also shared in a record stand of 185 with Matthews for the seventh wicket. When Lillee and lawson proceeded to take three quick wickets in Pakistan's second innings, it looked as if Australia might snatch an unlikely victory. on the last day, however, Mudassar, Imran and Zaheer steered Pakistan to a draw.
